USA And France Confirm For Coral Coast 7s

December 21, 2019

International teams will use the 2020 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens as part of their build-up towards the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

The tournament will be held at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka on January 15-18 with free entry for fans throughout the four-day tournament.

Next year will be the 10th chapter of Fiji’s McDonald’s Coral Coast Sevens and being the Olympic year, tournament director Jay Whyte said teams will be looking to use the event to test their players ahead of the four-yearly global showpiece.

“We expect the USA Falcons and the Fiji Development side that will be making their debut,” Whyte said.

“And coach Gareth Baber will want to use the tournament to add depth to his squad.

“ The French sevens team will look to come over and participate hoping to win the final place at the 2020 Olympics Games that will played out in June.

“Being the Olympic year we are hoping that Fiji can replicate what they did in 2016 in Rio.

“We believe the 2020 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens will play a very important part in that.

“We got Hong Kong coming back for their fourth year in a row because they believe that this tournament is a great way to develop both men and women squads.”

New Role for Caucau

Former national rep Rupeni ‘Bua Bullet’ Caucau will be the 2020 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens ambassador.

“Tournament director Jay Whyte said the tournament on January 15-18 should be exciting.

“We are honoured to have Rupeni as our ambassador and we thank him for making himself available,”Whyte said.

“His presence completes the most exciting line-up to date, which includes our inaugural women’s tournament and overseas teams,” he said.

“All the former ambassadors include the late Jonah Lomu rated Caucau as one of the best wingers in the world.”

Caucau played at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
