After being home for more than one year, Kajal Krishtika Narayan thought it was time to use his talents.

The 28-year-old was a chef at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort in the Coral Coast before she was sent home because of COVID-19 pandemic.

Five months ago, she opened her café, Retro Café at Cuvu Market in Sigatoka. It was an investment of $18,000.

“It was almost Christmas time when my sister-in-law and I decided to come up with a mobile ice-cream parlor at Cuvu Beach,” said Ms Narayan.

“We had done a full setup on my dad’s three tonne truck and sold shakes, smoothies and ice-cream only, it was a successful start even though we didn’t have a huge profit due to the unfavorable weather conditions for several days.”

“After discussions with my husband we went forward with the business that we have now and now it is starting to pick up as more people are starting to know about the place. We are the most busy on the weekends.”

Ms Narayan is the eldest of three sisters and was motivated by her vegetable farmer parents to commence with her business. The business offers mostly made-to order food with hot and cold beverages.

These include burgers, wraps, subways, grilled and fried chicken meals together with sandwiches, shakes, smoothies, homemade flavored sparkling juices and ice cream.

“We also have espresso hot and cold drinks as well,” she added.

“Our coffee is the most premium quality coffee you can find in Fiji. Also, on offer is one of the most cute and coziest eateries that you can find around at an affordable price.”

“To add onto, we do BBQ from Wednesday to Sunday and we have had customers reviews as it is the tastiest BBQ.”

She currently employs four staff.

Retro Café opens from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 8pm on Sundays.

“We can accommodate about 10 people at the moment but we are expanding our seating capacity by putting up umbrellas and seats outside,” said Ms Narayan.

“We also do venue hire and catering of special orders on request.”
